Sara Damewood, MD is the Emergency Ultrasound Section Chief and Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship Director at the University of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine. Her interests within ultrasound include simulation, measuring ultrasound competency, and coding and billing for the department.
Prior to returning to the Midwest, she completed an ultrasound fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and served as faculty. Dr. Damewood completed her residency/chief residency at Albany Medical Center Emergency Medicine residency program and is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
Dr. Damewood oversees all aspects of ultrasound operations and education for all levels of learners. Under her leadership, significant advances in archiving and reviewing clinical ultrasound images have led to improved ED patient care. She developed a clinical ultrasound fellowship in 2014, with graduating fellows serving as ultrasound directors in regional EDs.
Dr. Damewood initiated a longitudinal research project exploring cardiopulmonary ultrasound findings in septic shock, in collaboration with the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care, seeking to learn more about the physiology of resuscitation and septic shock.
Nationally, Dr. Damewood is recognized as a leader in the clinical ultrasound community. She serves as the co-chair of the ACEP Ultrasound section simulation subcommittee, and has also played a significant role in the development of ultrasound fellowships nationwide. Dr. Damewood serves as chair of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships program development committee and is an inaugural member of the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC).
