Ivan Ortega is a second-year medical student under the mentorship of Dr. Patterson for this year’s Shapiro program. He is from Chicago and studied at Loyola University Chicago for undergrad and obtained his master's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he also spent a year working as a paramedic in the Chicagoland area. The experience he gained there influenced his decision to pursue a career in emergency medicine. This summer, Ivan is working on a machine learning-based algorithm to identify patients at high fall risk using data already present in the EHR. He is looking forward to gaining greater exposure and involvement in the field of emergency medicine, as well as an appreciation of computer science.
