Additional Benefits

University of Wisconsin
Emergency Medicine Residency

Beyond the myriad of educational advantages, choosing to complete your residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics will provide you with access to a variety of additional benefits. Being part of a globally recognized university and health system means that ample resources, services, and opportunities are available that will allow you to grow personally and professionally and ensure there is always support in place when you need it.

The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine invests significant time and resources in each resident so that you can focus on learning and providing remarkable care to patients. From administrative support to book clubs, resident outings to group community service events, we aim to offer a well-rounded, equitable experience for all residents.

Competitive Salary & Benefits

Our program's total rewards and employee services packages competitively compensate residents in order to recruit, recognize and reward highly talented individuals. Our total rewards package goes beyond the traditional thought of benefits to help you balance your work and life needs.

Residents are employed through UW Health but maintain affiliate appointments with UW-Madison. This allows residents to access library services and recreational facilities on the UW campus, as well as qualifying them for discounts at various local businesses.

You can learn more about stipends and benefits, including six weeks of paid family leave, here.

Dynamic Wellness Resources

At UW, we take seriously the issues of burnout and second victim syndrome. We've created the UW ED CARESTeam (Caregiver Assistance RESponse Team), a confidential and free resource to support any member of the ED team experiencing stress or the effects of second victim syndrome. Residents also have access to free personal counseling and consultation, child care assistance, and UW/UW Health sponsored wellness programs.

Resident retreats and quarterly book clubs foster resident bonding while educating us at the same time, and close working relationships with colleagues and staff means that residents are part of the larger emergency department family and are treated as such by our excellent nurses, techs, and unit clerks. The combination of these factors makes our ED a unique place to work, learn, and grow as a physician.

Residents in our program take advantage of the many benefits Madison and the surrounding area have to offer. We frequently gather after work for group dinners; go for runs and bike rides; hike and camp in Wisconsin's incredible state parks; or hang out at one of Madison’s many concert venues. And in 2020, Wisconsin was ranked one of the least stressed states in the nation.

Financial Support for Education Opportunities

Residents are eligible to receive significant financial support to attend national conferences, such as the American College of Emergency Physicians' Annual Assembly, as well travel grants toward global health elective rotations.

Commitment to an Equitable Community

The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to the constant endeavor toward excellence in all that we do and toward fostering a culture of inclusion and respect among our patients, employees, learners, and the communities we serve. Through teaching, discovery and advocacy, we hope to promote equity and access to high quality healthcare.

We care for all patients compassionately and without judgment, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, or any other human factor. As one of over 75 GME programs at UW Health, UW Emergency Medicine is engaged in strategic investments and diversity programs institution-wide.

We also believe it is important to engage in civic health. As such, our emergency departments were also among the first in the nation to offer nonpartisan, non-interruptive online voter registration directly in our facilities through a partnership with VotER.
